 &euro;45; $79.97 AUD </p>
<p><u>Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne</u> for the Playstation 2 was originally released to Japanese audiences on February 20th, 2003 in both a standard and deluxe version (which went for &yen;12,800 and included some bonus items). It was the first true addition to the main series since the original  Super Famicom release of <u>Shin Megami Tensei II</u> on March 18th, 1994. As such, one can understand the magnitude of releasing a full-on sequel for a series almost ten years later. <u>SMTIII: Nocturne</u> was highly anticipated and met with good sales upon its release. </p>

<p>Around this time,  fans noted that Atlus USA, Inc. was oddly quiet about the title. Nothing was announced about the game's release and it was assumed the title was simply being passed over for other, smaller (and logically, easier to localize) titles. Time came and went.</p>
<p>Atlus Co, Ltd. eventually announced a second version of <u>SMTIII: Nocturne</u>; a &quot;Director's Cut&quot; of sorts. It would be referered to as the &quot;Maniax&quot; version and feature a slew of new additions and adjustments. These included such things as:
<ul><li>General   game balance   adjustments   (lowered   ambush attacks, lower instant death rates, etc.)</li>
<li>Selectable difficulty level from the on-set (Normal or Hard) </li>

<li>The addition of the Labyrinth of Amala and, hence, the addition of the Fiends</li>
                 <li>A new &quot;true demon&quot; ending </li>
                 <li>Pierce was added as a new skill</li>
                 <li>A new opening movie  </li>
               </ul>

<p>The addition that gained the most attention, however, was Dante of Capcom's <u>Devil May Cry</u> series. The story goes that the developers enjoyed the game and   character enough to add him into the &quot;Maniax&quot; version, initially without Capcom's approval. Upon showing the game to Capcom, they liked what Atlus had done and approved of the use of Dante. Dante acts as more than a simple cameo, although at the same time he isn't given a full-on treatment that rivals other main characters in the title. He is, however, a nice addition to the story, well utilized and true to his existing personality. Since the release of the title, Atlus's Kazuma Kaneko became the designer of Dante's new demonic form in the critically acclaimed <u>Devil May Cry 3</u>. </p>
<p>Atlus USA, Inc. remained silent on this version for quite some time as well. However, they finally announced plans to release the &quot;Maniax&quot; version of the title in the United States. Due to the fact that none of the titles had been released here before the number was removed from the title and the game was released as simply <u>Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne</u>, dropping both the &quot;III&quot; and &quot;Maniax&quot; from the title. </p>

<p>Finally confirming rumors, European and Australian audiences  got their first shot at the game on July 1st, 2005. It was released under an agreement between Atlus, Ghostlight Interactive and Ubisoft. In order to be accessible, the game has a new selectable language option. Unfortunately, some players have reported that the translation into other languages is not at the same quality standards the English translation had set.</p>
<p>As far as the game itself goes, <u>Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne</u> was the first time the main series attempted a third-person viewpoint while within the dungeons. The ones that preceded it all utilized first-person dungeon segments. The overhead map view makes a return, although this time around it is far more detailed.</p>
<p>Battles have also been adjusted and are far more streamlined. <u>Nocturne</u> marks the first appearance of the Press Turn battle system, which was also utilized within <u>Digital Devil Saga</u>. Rather than the simple &quot;hit or miss&quot; system of most RPGs (including the first two <u>Shin Megami Tensei</u> titles), the game rewards or punishes you for good or poor actions in battles. Your team has one Press Turn icon per character and any action uses one of these. Taking advantage of an enemy's weakness or getting in an especially strong hit uses half of a Press Turn icon instead of a full one. This half icon can be used as though it was a full icon, effectively lengthening your attack time. However, if you miss or the character is strong to your attack an additional Press Turn icon will be wasted. This will be multiplied by how many characters the spell or attack affects, which means a single bad choice can waste your entire turn.</p>

<p>As far as influences, <u>Nocturne</u>, much like the ones preceding it, most heavily focuses on an altered Judeo-Christian belief style and a single main Creator God. However, like the games before it, lesser gods and demons of various other mythologies do make appearances of varying importance. The story itself focuses on the destruction of the world and its subsequent rebuilding. The protagonist's decisions along the course of the game affect the world's path and outcome. This dynamic required the existance of a few completely different endings, all of which are reached by taking different paths in the game.</p>

Btw, except for the angle bracket characters, you should try to find a browser that doesn't convert special characters into &xxx; style literals. With FF3 if you just hilight the text and right click "view selection source" you'll end up with pretty much all you need. Then just fix the links if there are any.

edite: Now you see...

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/shin-megami-tensei-nocturne/

Congratulations!

PS: The old address works too...

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/shin_megami_tensei_nocturne/

PPS: Actually I started working on a redirect system (not yet finished)

The correct relative address for Nocturne is now:

/games/megami-tensei-titles/shin-megami-tensei-nocturne/

The old one should appear pretty seamless once I'm done however.

Btw, we're gonna need someone to write up Series pages now.

It's kind of hard to pick out what's what in a jumble of html.  rolleyes  WTF else am I supposed to think when you say "copy all the html" of the "body?"  Not exactly implicit nomenclature.

It looks okay in the preview so I guess it's up to you now to change the permalink. goodnight

The permalink was correct btw. Are you sure you can't edit it? It is just under the title input field.

I can edit the very last portion of the permalink but the "archives/uncategorized/2008/10/" portion coming just after the main site URL confused me.  I've got a few things to take care of this afternoon but I'll probably migrate some other pages sometime later... if you don't mind holding my hand through this just a little longer.  sweatdrop

The thought occurs to me that sometime in the future we may want to rewrite some of these game articles.  While generally informative most of them seem to contain more than a few statements of just sheer speculation or just plainly Tony's own personal opinion.  Personally I'd like to see more objectivity in our articles.  Aside from that I think we might want to include a slimbox for box art, maybe a few screen shots.

P.S.  Firefox 3 causes all kinds of crashes on my laptop for some reason.  Is there a way to set it to appear more like "classic" Firefox?  All the transparencies and graphic intensive elements to it echo the problems I have running Vista in Aero mode.

I went ahead and migrated the page for Digital Devil Saga.  I'm still not entirely sure on how to make posts private.  It doesn't appear to an option in the manager.

Hmmm, that's interesting. This article says FF3 graphics are hardware accelerated (via Cairo)

http://www.sitepoint.com/article/firefox-3-whats-new-whats-hot/4/

I'd say your bugs are in your graphics interface more than likely. The only way you could potentially fix it is to go into your cards graphics options (personalize->display settings->advanced) and take off everything that sounds flashy (turn off hardware acceleration maybe if you have the option)

That is pretty drastic and will probably slow things down considerably (though use less battery and possibly noticibly cool things down)

Alternatively you could look into nTune and try underclocking your card. I'd try that first if you can figure it out. I've hard to underclock many of my cards to play some games that use the hardware too aggressively.

edited: Hopefully FF2 development hasn't stopped. I'd be surprised if features like that aren't backported. I'd test it but FF doesn't seem to like having multiple versions of itself in the same environment.

Even the admin can't edit the structure of the links directly that way. All that matters is the final part of the path. Unless there is another post with the same name, you don't even have to add all that extra stuff to get there normally.

Yeah I've pointed that out before, but don't expect me to personally start messing with the content of articles... I'm all for it though over time. I'm currently giving credit to Tony for his articles, but if you see a factual error or anything simple go ahead and edit it. We can always give editing credits to his articles I suppose.

I'm heading into town for the night/day so don't be surprised if I don't get your articles up today.

The private button is right under the published state drop down. If you can't see it, don't worry about it. It doesn't matter until the page is published anyhow. Once it is it should be private to the author (after I make it private)

You don't need to add the <p><em>© Tony</em></p> type credits. They're inserted by the page templates automatically.

You also don't wanna repeat the title <h2>Digital Devil Saga ~Avatar Tuner~</h2> in the contents (it will be supplied by the title)

Was DDSaga Avatar Tuner called "Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga" in the states? Not even with the Avatar Tuner subtitle?

Unfortunately yes, though they left the kana on the logo for some reason.  I'm not sure they even used "Avatar Tuner," at all in the NA localization.

The dubjob always seems to illicit positive reactions among NA gamers too for some reason, despite being some of the worst hack-jobs I've ever witnessed.  In the opening movie Gale has a line of untranslated dialog, as well as periodically, throughout both games, certain lines will be said by the wrong character.  Not to mention they gave Cielo some horrible faux-Caribbean accent...  That's just my cursory evaluation too, I can't bring myself to watch the rest on youtube.

So far all I've cut are broken links.  I don't really feel comfortable chopping up Tony's work either so I think it's probably best to leave it as is until we can get up something better.  Sucks we don't have more people volunteering but I've got something in mind that might help us fix that.  So basically I'll migrate most of what he has up now as far as the games section is concerned, probably that Lucifer vs. Satan article and whatever else seems generally pertinent.  I'll make a list of what I think should be reworked and what's missing and go from there.

If a page existed for Persona 2 Batsu I am unable to find it in the Tony directory.

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/
Also the MIP link on this page appears to be broken.

Went ahead and prepped the DDS2, DSKRvs.SA, Jack Bros., Persona 3 and Megami Tensei pages for migration.

I don't think there is any P2 stuff. There might be something in an unreferenced directory, but in general it doesn't appear that was Tony's MO.

I meant to edit the links in the Video Games page but it slipped my mind. I can pass authorship of that post on to you so you can manage that if you don't mind...

This is the last sign of me you'll see today/tonight. Heading into town -- yesterday's plans were foiled by a drained battery doh

I'll have to read/reply to this later. In the meantime I put the Video Games Page post in Pending Review status and made you the author. It's Private so you might have a harder time finding it. I'm not positive if you can edit a post after its in Review mode, but if you can't just let me know and I'll look into it later. The post still shows up in the page, but in the future I'll have to change the way this works so there isn't a published page open to arbitrary editing (ie. you could post anything you want on it and it would show up immediately on the site without review)

EDITED: Actually I can't seem to change it's un/published/review status. I'm not sure if that is because it's private (possibly a unique status) but at any rate go ahead and see if you can't edit it. Later...

Also the MIP link on this page appears to be broken.

You realize that link now goes to a redirect page:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/persona/

Should redirect seamlessly like Wikipedia. I just haven't programmed the redirect template yet (Wordpress has no official redirect capabilities, nor do any plugins exist)

If it isn't obvious this page is in the "Further Reading" list for the games page:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/persona-titles/

We need a general article for each of the different "series" btw... for that page and others. We won't call them series, because few of the games are really serial.

And from that page is the Revelations: Persona page:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/revelations-persona-titles/

I don't have time to get into detail, but the game pages are going to have to be broken up into regional pages, with the main page being about the Japanese release. Then other pages that cover the difference in each regions licensed release. Those will be on separate pages I think. I consider the website to be English (as a lingua franca) but not US or NA release centric. In fact if anyone volunteers to translate the website I'll make the effort to internationalize it in return.

When you do get around to fixing the links on the game page. They should look something like:

href="/games/megami-tensei-titles/shin-megami-tensei-nocturne/"

Some of the links will find the right page as they are, but that is not dependable, and they should look like above^

Btw, for me putting up these pages is actually a lot of work. So try to do everything you can to make my job easier. Though there isn't a ton you can do, you could try harder for starters to get the permalink right. It should be exactly the name Tony was using (the final name in the url -- we can change the titles, but his links should stay alive)

Though you can replace the underscores with dashes instead. Though that technically isn't necessary, might as well be consistent.

At any rate, I think I can only get up about one or two pages per day after each one is prepped. For an automated system, it still requires a lot of tweaking. I was expecting to put up most of the page tree in advance and wait for people to fill them in. But if you keep up at this rate, I'll probably be lagging way behind pretty much redface

If there was anyway I could offload this I'd be trying to goodnight

The link was taking me to the 404 page before but it seems to be working fine now.  sweatdrop

I'm writing up a solicitation for writers that I'm going to post around, see if we can't drum up some support.  I'll probably take on the more obscure titles if I can - most likely SMT if... and Soul Hackers.

The Wordpress does a lot of "self-correcting," for lack of a better term, when I save posts.  It likes to retitle the permalink with whatever page title I'm using.  confused
