Apparently this manga is being released by Tokyopop, coming out in English early 2008.

I found a description for the first volume online in French, so I roughly translated it.

Nobu and Yumi are two teenagers whose lives rock in horror the day when their school is transported in a world of darkness... They are the only survivors, which 560 students and 28 teachers are found dead. Returning to the real world alive, Nobu and Yumi become the centre pieces of a diabolic plot which aims at delivering the ground to the armies of darkness.

It sounds like a mix of SMT if... and Digital Devil Monogatari a bit. The world of darkness is the Makai, I'm guessing.

Yeah, wow.  That does look like crap.  Most SMT franchise-related manga I've found is usually pretty bad.  I actually was translating scans for somebody once, although I'm not sure if it was this one or not.  Looks about the same hyper-angular style though.

I read about this in an issue of Previews. According to TOKYOPOP (which is a manga publisher I don't even like because most of their translations are low-quality) it's the series that "inspired the videogames." That means it's probably really old. And most of the SMT stuff that's not related to the games winds up being pretty bad.
 I wish they'd release the game-based mangas, like the ones for DDS and Persona, but it's really unlikely.

T_T Why must everything inspired by/based off SMT fail SO bad.

Gr!  I think they should make DDS into a movie... live action style- It would be so awesome.

As for the manga- this isn't the first SMT-style Manga I've seen that's been translated into a language other than english- I ran into one of Megaten (I think  Demikids) while researching the Demikids anime

Here in Guatemala sucks too. Cause is a miracle if the Megaten games comes. And if they come here, since nobody knows them, they don`t buy them. And nope, not a single ATLUS commercial, not even video games comercial. This sucks.

I have the first four of the series and I like them. I think I will follow this manga until the end (there are 9 volumes + 1 one shot)
Though the characters and story are not the same as in the games, the atmosphere is really similar. According to me, the most negative point is the design although it is better and better from one volume to the other. But I prefer much more the style of the manga "Persona"!!

I've gotten and read the first volume. It isn't great, but it's better than I expected. It seems to be following the general story of SMTI with the cast of If...

I wonder what the deal is with Hazama though, has he reincarnated or something crappy like that?

By first volume you mean "Shin Megaten If" or "Shin Megaten Kahn 1"?
