Well, as far as an anime series, Hellsing is my favourite.  The only thing that comes even close, for me...the original Aeon Flux stuff from Liquid Television.  DeathNote is looking promising, though.  Anime movie...probably Nausicca, from Miyazaki.  Though ALL of his stuff is awesome.

Mmmm.... series well...:
Konjiki No Gash Bell (Zatch Bell, I put the Japanese title to imply that I watch it in Japanese subbed, not the crappy American dubbing.) Is good for some fun mindless entertainment.
Noir is a really good series too after it picks up....
Evangelion is ok but way overplayed....

Full Metal Panic! -Mercenary mech pilot goes undercover in a high school.

Planetes- One of the best shows I have ever seen set in a realistic future about  space debris haulers and would be my pick to show to anyone who thinks that anime is just pokemon or DBZ.

Fate Stay Night- About mages in a tournament for the Holy Grail. Its clever play on myth and legend from around the world should be of note here.

and then there's Gurren Lagann. I've never seen a show cover so much ground in such short amount of time while remaining incredibly entertaining.

I've seen a few good series, but one that really sticks out in my mind as faourite would be either:
Noir
or Konjki No Gash Bell (ZatchBell, but I watch it in Japanese /w subs... I cannot stand it dubbed)
or DevilLady
Evangelion is always good too...

I'd have to say Full Metal Panic, Tsubasa Chronicle, Gungrave, Hellsing Ultimate, and Ghost in the Shell. Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle are my favorite Miyazaki films, and I never really liked Naausica for some reason =/

I like over the top action scenes, and comedy, which is probably why the Hellsing OVA series has always sparked interest in me.

I didn't like the Devil May Cry anime though. I was hoping for something a bit more tied to the game series, maybe a bit more information on DMC4, and better action. It also seemed like they brought back the quiet Dante from DMC2 (which doesn't actually exist >> if you catch my drift).

The story of BACCANO! revolves around a bloody train robbery that occurs in 1932 America. Either by fate, or mere coincidence three infamous mafia families board The Flyingpussyfoot to compete for the trains heralded prize. What is even more surprising is the calamity that will occur on this train has been choreagraphed since 1711. I forgot to mention that more than a few of the main characters have existed for centuries, but this isnt a tale of vampires. Gorgeous animation and possibly the best fight scenes to grace the anime genre.

When the Devil May Cry anime falls short in the action department, you know its in trouble. The enemies are generic ghouls. (bleh)

Hey, if you liked Planetes, the director of that show (Goro Tanaguchi) did an awesome and under-rated action show called GunSword, which I love alot as well. It was unfairly avoided because it looks like a "Western-targeted program" (Yet people have no problem with more "slice o life school girl" shows and "yet another whiny punk kid in a giant robot" videos.)

For a show that could easily fall under cheap action cliches and one dimensional character traps, GunSword really surprised me with making the characters more than silly jokes or easy excuses for action sequences.

Sounds like Devil May Cry was just written for the Yaoi crowd, like what happened with GunGrave:
For a bad ass game about shooting up crazy monsters in cool ways, the anime had incredibly lame fights and even weaker monsters (especially when they could have easily borrowed designs from the already released game) in the second half. It loses extra points by turning the sweet girl in the game into an obnoxious little tramp (another sure Shonen-Ai sign: they kill off any friendly girl who interacts with the hero and for the ones they don't kill off, are written in ways you wish they died. Kinda funny when you think about it.) The story should have ended in the past and allowed the game to tell the rest of it. I digress.

Dante's quiet again? Don't they know the reason most people like him is because he's a hotshot jerk who can't shut the hell up?

I agree about Gungrave. I think it's better to have over-the-top action sequences (alla FFVII: Advent Children) than to have poor boring action scenes like Gungrave did. I plenty enjoyed the beginning of the series, the whole mob anime thing, I hadn't seen much of that and I thought it was really cool (kinda made me think of the Godfather somewhat). Then the whole Beyond the Grave part at the end ruined it, should've ended in Brandon's death and then pick up in the game.

A friend of mine has started making me watch Fushigi Yugi. It feels reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z a little bit (replacing the screaming with romance segments). Despite it being a romance, it's actually pretty funny. It also pokes fun at gay people >> I've oddly enough, found myself liking it, go figure.

Another good series is xxxHolic...and by series I mean the movie and manga, not the animated series. The anime series leaves so much out from the books. It's got a strong hand in philosophy, being based of fortune telling and spirits. It's a crossover series, serving as the bridge between all of the clamp series, even being a direct cross between it and Tsubasa Chronicle. If you read/watched Magic Knight Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, x/1999, Chobits, or any other Clamp works, you'll probably get more enjoyment out of it because you'll get all the inside jokes and references.

I didn't mind the DMC Anime at all, and enjoyed it a lot.  I actually liked the fact that the monsters were weak--it's not like end-of-the-world baddies show up 24/7.  It seemed pretty realistic to me, along with the fact that Dante is just to bad ass for these low level guys.  A good filler from DMC 1 to 4.

Current Favorite Anime?  I certainly can't think of my ALL TIME favorite...but I did watch Scrapped Princess recently and it turned out pretty good.  Starts out slow as hell though.  I think I'll start watching Gungrave when I get back to College, but first I hafta finish re-watching Yu Yu Hakusho.

I liked Yu Yu Hakusho, I never finished it though (I only watched it when it was on Adult Swim). I started watching X/1999 yesterday, but then found out you were supposed to watch the movie first =P So I'm actually going to do that now. It looks pretty interesting. Kinda like how a good reviewer put SMT3: Instead of the end of the world is coming, you must stop it, the plot is "The end of the world already came, now wtf do you do?" X/1999 follows that similarly, except the end of the world doesn't happen instantly, it kind of takes a while, but the characters aren't bothering to try and stop it.

The X movie isnt meant to be watched in companion to the series. In actuality the film is similar to the Escaflowne movie. Which means it is an abbreviated verison of the anime series. If you do watch the movie you will spoil the entire plot of the series in ninety minutes. Repeat, the movie is the series but shorter! My best attempt at preventing an X fan of being ruined by the movie. The film has crisp animation but it pales in all other categories in regards to the series.

I thought it was already spoiled by the 3rd episode of the Anime. You know, the whole future being told thing. I saw the movie, sorry =/ I liked the story overall, but the movie lacked character development. Very violent though, I like that =P At first I really just wanted to see it because I wanted to get the Tsubasa Chronicle references during Tokyo Revelations (where they go to an alternate universe of X). But now I'm VERY interested. I'm gonna finish the series then watch the OVA. I wish I had seen your post sooner, thanks for trying though.

Hahaha. My post was similar to those moments in film, where the bomb is about to go off and the lead character slo-mo screams, NOOOOOO! Hehe. Yeah the violence in movie is crazy. (The scene involving the piano wire still gets me, haha) My copy of the X move was from a chinese bootleg stand, which I found in Los Angeles Chinatown. The audio on my dvd is four seconds later than the onscreen animation. Good stuff! :keke: The Tsbusa Chronicles bit with X is pretty cool.

I love bootlegged anime from chinatown, however mine is from Toronto's Chinatown (slightly closer)

that's true, but buying bootlegged you don't need to worry about any of the troubles related to downloading, or getting a torrent with low health, and you don't need to worry about filling up your hd (not a problem for everyone I suppose) also since they have cases and are labeled it's easier to sort/recognize the dvds... but that's just my opinion.

I constantly have to clean my computer after I get down to 2 gigs on my computer (out of 35 total...ain't big). I plan to get some new parts to my computer, including eventually a CD burner so I can burn my anime to CDs.

This isn't exactly anime, but it looked pretty heavily inspired by it. If you haven't seen the movie Battle Royale, go and watch it on youtube NOW (if you can stand blood and a little bit of gore). That movie is freaking awesome. Basic summary: In Japan a new law was passed for some reason (I didn't get that part...) but it required every year some randomly selected Japanese class to participate in Battle Royale. Their teacher kidnaps the students and puts them on a deserted island. They have 3 days, to kill the rest of the students. Each student has an explosive collar on them, and if they are located within a certain zone, or theres more than 1 person alive by the end of the time limit, the collars detonate. It's a really F-ed up movie, but REALLY good as long as you aren't one of those sensitive types who get choked up every time someone mentions Columbine (not saying thats bad...I understand if thats how it is). Theres a 2nd movie but I haven't seen it yet. Both are located on youtube.

Another great, and recent, asian film I dug was Nightmare Detective. Sadly finding it online is near impossible to link to you guys. Purchased through good ol` yesasia.

The second movie is pure garbage, and the novel (which is translated) is far better than the first film. The manga of Battle Royale was written by the novelist in protest over how he wasn't satisfied with the movie, and has a slightly different ending than the book. So if you can, go read the comics. Tokyopop has the series in cheap, collected omnibuses.

Yeah, I don't think so. Characters like Kiriyama really ruined the novel, I felt he was better in the movie, because he comes off less like a character created by a 12-year-old or something, and more like a weird sociopath, which is far more realistic than how he's portrayed in the novel. You can understand why they just omitted his backstory completely when they made the movie -- because it's stupid as hell. The movie is better because it omits all the stupid and poorly written backstories.The graphic novels were also pretty bad, but there's nudity, so I guess that's enough incentive for some bother with it. Wasn't enough for me, though. I'd recommend everyone just read the Running Man, the Long Walk, and Lord of the Flies [all of which undoubtedly inspired Battle Royale], and skip over the awful novel and graphic novel.

I agree that the second movie was terrible, though. Jesus Christ. It made zero sense.

I seriously disagree. Kiriyama being turned into "generic terminator kid" was one of the worst things that was done for the film, right along side "former teacher is the one running the program and Shinji deserved to be killed in the beginning"". He was much more frightening after I learned that he was incredibly smart, was in the class (instead of some hired gun) and really didn't care about picking off his fellow classmates after flipping a coin. He thought ahead and took out each kid coldly and efficiently in a realistic manner, unlike the movie's "RWAR! I CAN WITHSTAND BULLETS AND EXPLOSIONS JUS CUZ!" guy

A good deal of the kids just hunt themselves for cheap plot convenience and the silliest of deaths in the film (two kids jump off a cliff) actually became rather tragic in the comic.

I wasn't watching the movie for snuff film antics, I just wanted some hard core drama. I didn't get alot of that there, but both the book and comic worked really well for me (the fact that the comic got really graphic in its depictions didn't hurt either) and both had the luxury of time so we could get to know the kids, and the twisted world they lived in.

I've always called "Versus" the closest thing out there to "Devil May Cry: The Movie". It's no surprise they got Ryuhei Kitamura (the director of Versus) to script the cutscenes of DMC3. Another fine film by him is Godzilla: Final War which features gun katas, matrix fu, Godzillia kicking the crap out of the silly american version, and the living embodiment of Mayor Mike Haggar, Don Frye.

Is the second series of Shakugan no Shana any good? Loved the first but I havent found any links to the second.

Lets just say it raises more questions regarding the Shana/Yuji/Kazumi/Konoe relationship, as well as problems regarding Silver (one hell of a plot twist, btw).  As for animation...I have to say the quality isn't as good as the first, but its gotten better.  The fight scene where Pheles and Margery attack is probably one of the most intense in the series, if not the.  So, if you liked the first one, you'll more or less like the second.

IMO burst angel was good. Rahxephon is classic and of course soul taker and dirty pair flash. I like ST because it is a good philosophy based/psychological anime. And Dirty pair because... Who doesn't want a laugh? H20 is a really good one I'm waiting on more translations it is really surprisingly sad bit well written. Shadow Skill and G Gundam also. Yuyu Hakusho shoulda been left on Adult Swim.... Irrumatus aesinae.

I must admit that Trinity Soul is going too slow! But I like the style, the effects, the music of the opening and ending, and because Persona series are my favorite franchise of Megaten.

Anyway, I just think is going too slow by now, but I sense something bigger and cooler later on the anime.

Trigun is my favourite hands down. I love it how you can always tell when someone has watched it from someone who has just looked at pictures. anyone whos watched it will say its got a good story and characters, but anyone who hasnt will say its crap and just full of gunfights, and i do not just make this up, i have tested this theory out and it works

Right now I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay into Miyazaki's late 70s mini(well as "mini" as you can get with compendious anime)-series Future Boy Conan, a surprisingly heart warming post-apocalyptic story about a kid who pretty much raises himself after his grandpa dies on a small island after the world is destroyed in some sort of "magnetic war."  I guess its based off of an Alexander Key novel called "The Incredible Tide," which I incidentally had the pleasure of reading in seventh grade, after which I promptly forgot all about it.  Apparently its an *extremely* rare novel and was only in print (in English I suppose) for a few years in the 70s as is my understanding.  <------- Digression

Other than that its all been Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman!

And of course the new Hakaba no Kitarou series that's airing in Japan right now... Whenever they get around to being uploaded on Youtube that is...

It's actually supposed to take place in some sort of Nordic land I guess, but the whole movie is on youtube too, no subs I think under the title Horus Prince of the Sun.  It still looks astounding for its age though and there's a couple of songs in that movie that are actually really quite good.

Its weird that you posted up "Sora tobu yuureisen" since that was one of the first movies in college I watched all in Japanese.  Sensei loved the shit out of that movie.  "Taro Dragon Boy" I've seen parts of, although now that I think about it I'm not entirely sure where I would of seen them...?  Possibly while I was in Japan I suppose, but I don't really remember watching much of anything while I was there tv/movies/ or otherwise.  That was actually one of my major regrets about the trip was not getting in enough Japanese terebi.  Television is kind of the window into any given nation's pop culture.

For the record, apparently "Hols" is the more respectible localization. Dunno the official line, but it does seem more Norse / less Egyptian. Of course I wouldn't put it above the Japanese to mash-up the mytho-verses.

I like..Hellsing, Black Lagoon, Death Note, Trinity Blood and FMA.

Currently getting into Soul Eater.

So far only two episodes have been released,and I've been looking into the manga as well.I really like the atmosphere involved,and of course...students at a Shinigami University[I think of Bleach in some ways;soul reapers,etc.],also makes me get more interested in the series.

I'm watching Soul Eater as well, it's like an anime by Tim Burton >_>

It really reminds me of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Also watching Macross Frontier, Code Geass R2 to get my mecha fix now that Gundam 00 is over, Vampire Knight.

Soon as some friends of mine told me the description with the whole "netherworld school" and a "shinigami" involved,I had to see what they were talking about,lol.

I love genres like this,even the humor keeps it going.The whole concept of weapon masters and their partners as weapons,is another thing that catches my interest...I want to know more about how that works and all.
