Title: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: yksehtniycul on October 10, 2008, 02:49:18 PM Is it valuable to open up the blog to commentary? I'll have to make sure the mightiest anti-spam tech is in place. And it basically precludes the possibility of technical addendums (edited: or possibly I can find a sticky comment work around)
On the other hand, it might make the place appear more alive. And people wouldn't have to go thru the BBS to point out a simple mistake for example. Only problem is I can't and won't approve every comment, and I'm not sure someone else should be doing that either. Title: Re: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: DevilRy on October 10, 2008, 03:01:18 PM Maybe there's a way so only registered users on the forums could post comments on the blogs?
Title: Re: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: yksehtniycul on October 10, 2008, 03:31:11 PM That would kinda defeat the purpose I think. And I'm not sure automatically cross registering users is necessarily the best idea. And if it did work that way, I think users should register thru Wordpress. And as it is, there isn't an obvious way to subscribe to Wordpress. Though I could probably figure something out.
I'm mostly afraid posts will just buildup a layer of spam over time. Regardless I don't think it should be done without anonymous comments. I just think the barrier to comment should be low as possible. Other than that, I just don't have enough experience with blog commentary to know what to expect / would it be worth it. Title: Re: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: DevilRy on October 10, 2008, 03:34:46 PM I know gaygamer.net allows comments on their blog posts but I have no idea if they're using Word Press or not (my guess is yes though, sheerly based on similarity in layout).
The ever-annoying "CAPTCHA" maybe? Title: Re: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: yksehtniycul on October 10, 2008, 03:58:52 PM There is a spam recognition plugin which comes packaged with Wordpress I think. I could turn it on and see how it does. The old Wordpress database is fairly full of spam (awaiting approval)
Captcha is nearly as frustrating as registering. Perhaps if you could connect Captcha with a cookie somehow, it might work. If I do enable comments I'll probably require them to be brief if possible. We could try to setup a discussion system to link to a related BBS thread. It's not that complicated if you do it manually. Only problem is if the BBS ever changed the links would probably break. We could possibly use a query that does a search for a thread by name and displays the results instead. That can be automated. Title: Re: Should we open up the blog to comments? Post by: Emilio Morales on October 10, 2008, 07:24:40 PM I hope "nay!" is for "no". In my opinion, if users or guest users want to add comment they need to do them on the bbs, just make a post on the bbs about the latest new so we can discuss about it.
