This sounds like an interesting project.
I was thinking about working on a mapper for SMT1, but that's about it. My free time is limited so I wouldn't want to try anything to involved right now.
The combat system thing sounds interesting, and BYOND is a good language to do it in, from what little I played with it. Well, not only the language but the builting libs that make RPG/MMO/Text-adventure game making so painless.
Good luck with the project and please post when there's something playable.

The story mentioned sounds workable.
Another alternative is to use the stories from SMT: 1, 2, or If (or some part thereof), which you can find in the walkthrus (e.g. on gamefaqs, although I guess they might be on he website for this forum too) as a base. You could also make up backstories for characters, for example, the Hero's Mother in SMT 1, or the Doctor Next Door (the Heroine's Father). I've always wondered why the doctor doesn't work a the hospital, for example (maybe he does... I've played very little of the game so far...).

Hi, I'm a fan of the MegaTen series... Own Persona:Revelations and Persona2:Eternal Punishment, and am playing (slowly) through SMT1 for SFC (well, with the AG Translation Patch). Would like to play SMT:IF but hardly know any kana... I know there's a walkthru but it's not the same.
I like "cyberpunK" games, anime, and movies in general... big fan of Ghost In the Shell, The Matrix, etc. and got into programming partially to make tabeltop RPGs less tedious.

It would probally be easier to homebrew a remake, or something, than to get Atlus to do a remake. (not that a remake would be easy at all). The reason is that the two core designers have left Atlus, as far as I know, and so there's no-one passionate about the games there anymore. Also, anyone from the origional team is probally also looking to work on something new.
As was mentioned earlier, Atlus US doesn't do any development, so it's unlikely that there's much initial consideration beign given by Atlus (Japan) as to bringing the platform to the (from their perspective) 5 or so people in the non-Japanese speaking world who also like MegaTen.
With strong enough artwork, though, something based on it would probally be big stateside (didn't the Matrix games do well, despite not being all that good)... but who would bankroll it?
