1  Reincarnation / Beta Opening Only / Re: About name changing... on: August 22, 2008, 02:29:55 AM
There are independent post level based titles. I erased the names, so you just see stars.

Btw, you can't declare yourself "DDDB Official" anything *points to your user title*

If user customizable titles become a problem I'll lock them so they must be changed by request.

Wow, are you kidding me? It's a stupid user title, and this is an internet forum -- who cares?!

Seeing as how the new ownership here kind of sucks, I guess I won't be wasting my time here. I'm also sure a lot of people don't appreciate the mass e-mailing and the public displaying of their e-mail addresses, by the way.

Sorry I haven't been online much last couple of days. I just finished re-formating my PC. Anyway, you might notice a small update. On all of your own posts and on your profile page, you should see a warning bar. Whenever a rule is broken, the bar will go up an appropriate % for the degree of the action. When the bar reaches 100% the staff member will have the option to temporarily ban the offender. Then the case will be examined by the whole staff and we will determine what % they will start at on their return or wether a longer ban term is needed (in extreme/repeat ban cases). The bar can be lowered over time by staying active and making meaningful posts. I feel this is a better system for banning because it can be more forgiving and allows for prior warning before action is taken. However, it also allows for immediate action for extreme cases so things can be kept under control.

Wow, very disappointed in this change of ownership.

If you are trying to set a speed record for some reason, I'd focus on speed so you can escape every fight, and save/reload a lot, occasionally stopping to kill extremely higher level demons with explotiable weaknesses for massive exp -- disclaimer: I've never played SMT3 myself.

I'm not trying to speed run it or anything. I actually have a reason for wanting to get through it as quickly as I can, but it's not because I'm looking to set a record or anything. Though, it would be interesting to watch someone speed run Shin Megami Tensei III. Far more interesting than watching people speed run Final Fantasy VII. If someone does decide to do this: record it and send it to SpeedDemosArchive or something so I have something to watch.

The second movie is pure garbage, and the novel (which is translated) is far better than the first film. The manga of Battle Royale was written by the novelist in protest over how he wasn't satisfied with the movie, and has a slightly different ending than the book. So if you can, go read the comics. Tokyopop has the series in cheap, collected omnibuses.

Yeah, I don't think so. Characters like Kiriyama really ruined the novel, I felt he was better in the movie, because he comes off less like a character created by a 12-year-old or something, and more like a weird sociopath, which is far more realistic than how he's portrayed in the novel. You can understand why they just omitted his backstory completely when they made the movie -- because it's stupid as hell. The movie is better because it omits all the stupid and poorly written backstories. The graphic novels were also pretty bad, but there's nudity, so I guess that's enough incentive for some bother with it. Wasn't enough for me, though. I'd recommend everyone just read the Running Man, the Long Walk, and Lord of the Flies [all of which undoubtedly inspired Battle Royale], and skip over the awful novel and graphic novel.

I agree that the second movie was terrible, though. Jesus Christ. It made zero sense.

6  MEGAMI TENSEI™ Uncensored / Tokyo 202X / [SMT3] Quick playthrough build. on: January 07, 2008, 08:26:19 PM
I want to play through Shin Megami Tensei 3 as quickly as I possibly can, and wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on what kind of build should be used for something like that, as I'm not sure what would be best. I'm don't know if I should focus on making him a physical fighter so he can pound the hell out of everything, or if I should focus largely on magic so he can abuse his enemies' weaknesses and garner extra turns, or what. On one hand, I can just rely on demons for magic, but on the other hand, the protagonist is better for abusing weaknesses [as far as I know] because you can give him a varied move-set that can exploit the majority of weaknesses the enemies you encounter may have.

Any ideas?

A friend of mine is a huge, wait H-U-G-E, Suikoden II fan. Back when he first beat it I listened to weeks of pre hype. So when he placed it in my paws I was super excited. But after an hour or so I turned off the ps1. I understand that rpg plots occassionally take hours for the story to kick in, but Suikoden IIs plot was so by the books. Main character and best friend fighting an empire. Check. Seperated from best friend later to become rival. Check. A mysterious girl. Check. It was a little too much for me. Rpgs for me dont have to be incredible original, see the standout Grandia, but do something different!

That's probably why Suikoden II felt like such a huge disappointment. I was expecting this epic adventure since everyone spoke of it as if it was the greatest RPG of all time, and what I got was something that couldn't even rival the first Suikoden game. It was boring. I kept waiting for the story to pick up, and it never did. It's too bad such an awesome villain like Luca Blight was wasted on such a boring and overrated video game. I also couldn't stand how homoerotic Jowy was. Konami was probably trying to appeal to the female crowd, but all it did was annoy the hell out of me.

I havent found a copy of Nocturne yet, but I will eventually and at a low price. The only rpg I have been giddy enough to pay a high fee was Panzer Dragoon Saga. My saturn was getting no love and I had Dragoon 1 and Zwei so, yep. I bought it five years ago for around 80 bucks and have yet to regret it. Though it hasnt aged super well, ugh I hate the language the characters speak.  angry

Sega needs to figure out a way to get Panzer Dragoon Saga out to the [English-speaking] masses. Xbox Marketplace or the PlayStation Network is probably our best bet. Or, packing it in with a new Panzer Dragoon game, kind of like what they did with Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Also, I enjoy the fictional language. I like that the developer actually put some effort into creating the language, and that it's not just a bunch of gibberish. I'm glad Team ICO took the same route in using a fictional language for their fictional universe.

Why don't you rip something that everyone and their mother hasn't already done? Such as NPCs from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, or the protagonists from Innocent Sin.

The price of Nocturne on ebay is pretty sickening. You should rent it from gamefly, and discreetly keep it forever.

It seems to be going for as much, if not more, than Suikoden 2 on eBay. Though, at least with Shin Megami Tensei 3 you're getting your money's worth. Suikoden 2 is just awful, and totally not worth more than like, $25. I don't advise anyone pay more than $50 for Shin Megami Tensei 3, though. No video game is worth more than that. People on eBay are out of their goddamned minds.

but there was an english/japanese name comparison faq in the old Megaten Haven wiki if it is still there.

It should still be there -- I was just on there a few days ago looking to see if anyone bothered to contribute to my composer articles. Which no one has done. I believe the name comparison chart is still there, too.

It would be very nice, instead, if you do a graphical adventure :3. Well, just an idea.

Yeah, no one bothers with pens and paper anymore these days. If it doesn't have graphics, no one will bother.
