It certainly does seem like that. That's an interesting find.
I don't know of other games, but there is a Futurama episode with a somewhat similar basic plotline. Fry finds this dog in the present that waits for him for years, not knowing Fry went to the future. It eventually dies. It's quite a sad episode.
