Will Shin Megami Tensei ever come out for the DS?

I wouldn't hold my breath.  They announced without having any team gathered to develop it, and I haven't heard an news of a team being gathered.
But they are not at a complete stand-still as Etrian Odyssey was created to test how different aspects work on the ds... aka seeing what works and what doesn't for when/if they do make SMT DS.

If they did, I'd probably buy a DS. However, Atlus have already ready re-released Persona on the PSP (in Japan at least) and I don't see Persona 3 being joint-released on the Wii Okami style.

If they release it in Japan, give sales of SMT games I'm sure they'll release it over here, considering Etrian Odyssey (Sekaiju no Meikyu) did well over here too. I can't wait to see further development.

As for Persona PSP I wonder if they won't do their regular hack job to that one like they did to the PSX version >:| This is their time to make ammends for the crap they did in the past.

In an interview on this site somewhere, an Atlus rep said they didn't intend to release any legacy titles on portables etcetera, though they hadn't ruled out digital distribution in the future -- ie. sales which did not involve packaging/distribution.

So something like WiiWare or Virtual Console? That's all I can think of...at least for the SMT titles, for Persona I doubt anything like a download...unless it's an add-on to a Wii game..like you get to play it if you beat theWii game or something... :/ :\

Yeah, something like that. Basically they're saying they're willing to consider the localization, but unwilling to gamble on the distribution I guess.

I know this is a bit late, but I think the localization part is a little off. Guys over at Atlus USA have repeatedly stated that something like SMT I and II is pretty much out of their hands on VC due to how it is set up. They would pretty much make zero money. I'm pretty sure comments like this are still up on the new board over at Atlus.

I dunno... a localization can realistically be very cheap -- especially considering these games have been fan translated wink

It's gambling on the production that keeps the publishers up at night. If you did it virtual like, it would just be a function of licensing. Besides, that is just based on an answer Tony got in an interview with someone handling Raidou I think. Not to mention my foggy bottom memory of what was said. At any rate the basic answer was a hard copy release of those games was out of the question for AtlusUSA.

^You can believe what you want, but I am just telling you what I heard straight from the horse's mouth. ;)

And this horse happens to repeat itself often...At least on the VC, SMT 1 and 2 will never happen in the U.S.

edit - Actually, here is one of the comments:

^That is fine, but I remember that interview, and I can't seem to remember anyone ever hinting at digital distribution in the U.S.  rolleyes

It's in there somewhere. I don't see it in the DS interview, so it must be in the other. Oddly there is only the DS interview listed on the interview articles page:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/articles/interviews.php

But there is another interview on the website somewhere.

Ah, sure enough, I see it. Although I think that is a pretty ambiguous statement.

I guess I totally passed it off at the time, because we were already being told it was a virtual impossibility on the boards and in chat.

I'm not arguing anything. I just said what I saw. I'd honestly prefer these games not get localized in a way. If just makes dorks get all "official" about terminology.
